Scottish cardinal in unusual appeal to Parliament on abortion

Cardinal Keith O'Brien of Edinburgh, Scotland, has written to every member of Parliament, urging the lawmakers to "consider seriously any proposals… which would make early abortion more readily available."

Citing the "shamefully high level of abortions in the UK which continues to climb," the cardinal asked the lawmakers to "vote against measures which would exacerbate the situation."

Cardinal O'Brien reminded the members of Parliament that he had fought against the approval of clauses in the Human Fertilisaton and Embryology Bill that will allow for the creation of "hybrid" embryos and expand support for embryonic research.

He expressed regrets about those political setbacks in his message to the Parliament members, but said that he was making a special push on abortion because he did not want to question, later in life, "whether or not I did everything possible to fight for the right to life of the unborn." +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
