Papal doctor comes to town

He’s 84 years old and only has one patient but Italian physician Dr Renato Buzzonetti is still going strong as he arrives in Australia this week for World Youth Day.

That’s because Dr Buzzonetti is the Chief Pontifical Physician as well as being Director of Health and Hygiene for the Vatican City State for almost 40 years.

As part of Pope Benedict’ XVI's entourage Dr Buzzonetti he has plenty of experience to call on from his time as personal physician of the previous Pope, John Paul II.

He had to make on the spot decisions after the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul in 1981, recognising that the gunshot wound to the abdomen would be better treated at a major trauma centre rather than the nearby Vatican hospital.

During his 27 year service to the Pope Dr Buzzonetti had to deal with the John Paull II’s dislocated shoulder after a fall, fractured thigh, surgery for colon polyps and later on the need for tracheotomy.

Dr Buzzonetti is assisted by another physician from the Vatican City’s Health Services.
