Papal audience for King of Bahrain

Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday received Bahrain's King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa.

The Vatican said King Hamad also met the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti.

"The Vatican authorities had the opportunity to thank the king for the welcome he has shown to many Christian immigrants," the Vatican stated.

The pontiff and the Bahraini monarch met "in a cordial atmosphere" and their discussions stressed their "shared commitment" to inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue.

The two leaders also underlined the importance for Christians, Muslims and Jews to work together for worldwide "peace, justice and spiritual and moral values."

During their meeting, the Bahraini monarch invited the Pope to visit his country.
