March for gay rights and abortion in protest at Pope

BRISBANE'S gay and Aboriginal communities will join civil libertarians to protest against Pope Benedict XVI's stance on various social issues.

NoToPope Coalition protest organisers said they would march in Brisbane tomorrow in support of gay rights, a woman's right to abortion and contraception.

"We are protesting against the Pope's anti-queer, anti-abortion, anti-condom stance," spokesman Paul Benedek said.

"The Pope is an extremely powerful and influential figure, who has called homosexuality 'an intrinsic moral evil', has said that abortion rights are a 'new holocaust', and who tells those in the midst of the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa that contraception and sex education support a 'culture of death'."

The protest begins at 1.30pm in Queen Street Mall.
