Diocesan Clerical Appointments 2008 - Killaloe

4 Parish Priests to Retire....No Replacements

Four County Clare Parish Priests are retiring this month, without being replaced.

Priests in Carrigaholt, Cooraclare, Coolmeen and Doonbeg have all reached retirement but have agreed to remain on in residence, to cover essential church duties in their parishes.

In a clear sign of the times, the Diocese of Killaloe is facing a tougher struggle in staffing Clare's rural parishes and are looking to lay people to carry out more parish duties.

With just two local students now studying for the priesthood, the task of serving 58 parishes is becoming more difficult and the Bishop of Killaloe Dr Willie Walsh says it will lead to a greater involvement for lay people in the church.

New Bishop

Word has reached us here at CW that the terna list sent out just before Easter this year has basically been ignored by Rome (nothing new there then!!!) and the successor to Bishop Walsh is in fact going to come from Dublin.

The person being considered and hotly tipped is one who is going to be no great loss to Dublin as he is very conservative and has already been in friction with the hierarchy so the old mantra of moving one aside means moving them up and to the side still remains in force in the Church.

All one can say at this juncture is God help the priests and people of the diocese of Killaloe considering they have had 14 years of a liberal bishop well aware of his surroundings and his people.

Does the Pope have no compassion at all?
