Clerical ban of funeral songs is just for guidance

THE banning of "goodbye songs" at funeral masses in Co Monaghan has more to do with "guidance" than religious rules and regulations, clergy in Castleblayney said yesterday.

Priests in the Parish of Muckno hit back at the negative public reaction on a radio show after jazz musician Paddy Cole said he had been banned from speaking at his mother's funeral in the parish.

Despite the outcry from listeners to RTE radio's 'Liveline' programme, the parish issued a statement, saying it only wanted "to give help and guidance to the members of the Christian community".

The row blew up after a leaflet from the Bishop of Clogher, Joseph Duggy, was circulated in mass booklets.
