A NSW police officer, who has suffered a horror run of health since 2004, has had his dream of meeting the Pope come true.
54-year-old Senior Constable Gary Hill has been a police officer since 1986 but in 2004 was diagnosed with skin cancer.
He was told he would not return home after subsequently suffering a brain tumour in 2005 and a heart tumour in 2006.
However Senior Constable Hill beat the odds, and returned to work two years ago even after he was diagnosed with further tumours.
He was forced into hospital last week after suffering a brain seizure.
Senior Constable Hill’s local commander got in contact with the Vatican and Papal staff to realise the Catholic Constable’s dream of meeting Pope Benedict.
Senior Constable Hill was taken to Kenthurst yesterday in uniform taking two Akubra hats to pass onto the Pope.
But the visiting Pontiff had other headgear in his sights – opting instead for the police hat.
