Catholic bishops reject prayer translation

The proposed new English translation of the Proper of Seasons prayers has failed to win approval from the U.S. Catholic bishops.

So bishops will now have a chance to suggest changes to the text, a part of the Roman Missal, as it undergoes review prior to a new vote at their November meeting.

Erie Catholic Bishop Donald Trautman had criticized the translation, which involves prayers for Sundays and seasons such as Advent, Lent, Christmas and Easter. The bishop said parts of the translation were archaic, clumsy and used words people wouldn't understand.

The translations received neither enough "yes" votes for approval nor enough "no" votes for rejection at the June general meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Bishops who weren't at the meeting were able to vote by mail.

The mail ballots kept the measure from getting the two-thirds majority vote it needed to pass, according to a news release.

The draft will be presented to the bishops for renewed consideration, including the submission of modifications, before the November vote.
