Calls for Catholic Church to monitor lay organisations

A group which monitors religious organisations says the Catholic Church should monitor its lay organisations to avoid the problems which arose at the Bethel Covenant community in Leederville.

Community leader Kevin Horgan was asked by the church to step down this year over allegations of ongoing sexual misconduct.

But the director of the Concerned Christians Growth Ministries, Adrian Van Leen, says questions about Mr Horgan were first raised in the mid 90s.

He says the church has a duty of care and should educate people in lay organisations about good leadership so they cannot be manipulated and controlled.

Mr Van Leen says there needs to be more monitoring and greater accountability.
