Trend reversed: slight decline in Polish Mass attendance

In Poland, a survey by the Catholic Church Statistics Institute has revealed a recent decline in the number of Catholics attending Sunday Mass, after a substantial increase in earlier years, the KAI news agency reports.

In 2007 44% of Polish Catholics attended Sunday Mass.

That figure represents a 2% decline from 2006.

However it is still much higher than in 1993, when only 43% of Polish Catholics attended Sunday Mass.

Southeastern Poland reported the highest weekly church attendance with 72% of Catholics in the Tarnow diocese, 69% in the Rzeszow diocese, and 64% in the Przemysl archdiocese going to Sunday Mass.

Northwestern Poland and the city of Lodz have the country’s lowest church attendance rate: the Lodz and Szczecin-Kamien archdioceses recorded 29% Sunday Mass participation and the Koszalin-Kolobrzeg diocese 31%. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
