Polish university honors ally of John Paul II

Dr. Wanda Poltawska, a friend and collaborator of Pope John Paul II who was miraculously cured of cancer through the intervention of Padre Pio, received an honorary doctorate on June 9 from the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland.

Dr. Poltawski, a psychiatrist and champion of Christian family life, spent 5 years in a German concentration camp because of her active opposition to the Nazi occupation.

Later she worked closely with the late Pontiff both before and after his election to the papacy.

Today she is a member of both the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Pontifical Academy for Life. She was honored by the Catholic University of Lublin for her work to uphold human dignity.

In 1962, when he learned that Dr. Poltawska was gravely ill with a tumor that doctors considered inevitably fatal, Archbishop Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope, wrote to Padre Pio to ask the renowned friar's intercession on behalf of his friend.

Her sudden healing, for which doctors could not provide any medical explanation, was cited in the process that led to the canonization of Padre Pio by Pope John Paul II in June 2000. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
