Turk who shot Pope John Paul II seeks Polish citizenship

The lawyer for the Turkish gunman who shot and wounded Pope John Paul says his client has applied for Polish citizenship and wants to live in the late pontiff's country of birth when he's released from prison.

The lawyer also says Mehmet Ali Agca wants to be transferred to a prison in Poland to serve the
remainder of his term.

Agca shot and seriously wounded John Paul in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, on May 13th, 1981.

Two years later the pope met with Agca in an Italian prison and forgave him for the shooting.

Agca is due to be released in 2010 from a Turkish prison, where he's serving time for killing a Turkish journalist.

The Polish Embassy declined to comment on the application or its likelihood of success.
