Practicing Catholics missing from new Italian government leadership, journalist notes

An Italian journalist and pro-life campaigner has called attention to the absence of practicing Catholics from the new Italian government.

Giuliano Ferrara, the editor of Il Giornale who headed a slate of pro-life candidates in this year's elections, noted that while both previous center-right and –left governments have included practicing Catholics in their cabinet ranks, the new government assembled by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi does not.

Roberto Formigoni, a member of the Catholic lay movement Communion and Liberation, remains the center-right governor of Italy’s Lombardy region and Maurizio Lupi, a Communion and Liberation member, will serve as the new deputy speaker of the Italian parliament.

Ferrara observed that in the past, Italy’s political left has criticized Berlusconi and his political ally, Gianfranco Fini, the new parliamentary speaker, for being Catholic hypocrites.

Both men are divorced.
