Pope stumbles on step in basilica, goes on with ceremony

Pope Benedict XVI has stumbled on a step at the central altar of St. Peter's Basilica during a public ceremony.

Aides quickly helped Benedict stand up after the pontiff grabbed on to the side of the papal throne for support as he landed on his knees during the Pentecost Sunday Mass.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi says the pope is "quite well" after stumbling against a step leading to the seat.

The pontiff immediately went on with the 90-minute ceremony and later greeted pilgrims from his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square.
