Benedictums by SMS

IN an obvious pitch to tech-savvy genY kids, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI will send hundreds of thousands of text messages every day to registered pilgrims during World Youth Day, the six-day Catholic carnival in Sydney in July.

In addition to receiving the "daily inspirational text messages", pilgrims will be able to send messages to big-screen digital prayer walls located across Sydney.

Filtering out filth and sacrilege should keep Catholic censors busy.

To emphasise its hipness, the plan was announced yesterday by Cardinal George Pell, the Archbishop of Sydney, in a special YouTube broadcast.

He also revealed pilgrims would have access to an official WYD social networking site, XT3.com, enabling them to communicate with each other and share their experiences of the event.

How divine.
