Pope in NY for anniversary Mass

Pope Benedict XVI will celebrate the third anniversary of being elected head of the Roman Catholic Church with Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral in New York.

The Pope's visit to New York, as part of a six-day US tour, has included a visit to a synagogue and the UN.

He told member states they should solve the world's crises together.

On Sunday, he will visit Ground Zero, the scene of the 11 September 2001 attacks in New York, before celebrating Mass at Yankee Stadium.

He returns to Rome later on Sunday.

Synagogue visit

During his speech at the UN, the Pope criticised the way that a few powerful states exercised a stranglehold on world power.

He insisted that collective action by the whole international community was the only way to solve the planet's problems.

The German-born Pope's visit to the Park East synagogue in New York made him the first leader of the Roman Catholic church to enter a Jewish place of worship in the country.

He was welcomed by the Rabbi, Arthur Schneier, a survivor of the Holocaust. The Pope later attended an inter-faith meeting with leaders of other Christian denominations.

During his visit to Washington earlier in the week, he met President George W Bush at the White House and celebrated open-air Mass at the Nationals stadium.

Addressing 40,000 people, he spoke of the sexual abuse of children by US Catholic clergy before talking privately to a group of people who had been abused by priests.
