Polish archbishop speaks on university-award dispute

The Archbishop of Lublin, Poland, has made a public response to a dispute over an award granted by a local Catholic university to the deposed Archbishop of Warsaw.

The Catholic University in Lublin honored Archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus with an award named after the university's founder, Father Idzi Radziszewski.

The honour angered some Polish Catholics, who cited the evidence that Archbishop Wielgus had collaborated with Polish secret police under the Communist regime.

Revelations of that collaboration prompted the archbishop to resign in January 2007 - on the day of his scheduled installation to head the Warsaw archdiocese.

Archbishop Jozef Zycinski of Lublin, who is chancellor of the university, said that the award should be seen in proper context.

Archbishop Wielgus, he argued, is deserving of respect for his office as well as criticism for his mistakes.

Archbishop Zycinski himself is a past recipient of the Radziszewski award, as is Father Michal Heller, who recently won this year's Templeton Prize for his work in cosmology. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
