Egyptian leaders object after London airport officials seek to search Coptic Pope

Egyptian government officials have lodged a formal protest with the British ambassador after the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church was ordered to undergo a body search at London's Heathrow airport, the BBC news service reports.

Pope Shenouda III, the leader of Egypt's largest Christian group, was told that he would be subject to a full search as he left London to return to Egypt after a visit to open a new cathedral in Hertfordshire.

The Coptic official refused to submit to what he saw as an indignity, and security personnel did not press the issue.

Coptic Church officials said that their Pope had never previously been asked to undergo a search.

The British ambassador in Cairo has reportedly asked for a personal meeting with Pope Shenouda in order to apologize.
