Vatican-watcher sees Cardinal Bertone traveling as Pope's surrogate

"There's practically no difference between what John Paul II did on each one of his trips and what Cardinal Bertone does now."

That is the view of Sandro Magister, the noted Vatican-watcher of La Chiesa: "It is as if he were traveling in the place of Benedict XVI." In his latest Chiesa post, Magister notes that Cardinal Bertone has made seven trips abroad in the past 9 months.

The Secretary of State recently returned from a trip that took him to Armenia and Azerbaijan, shortly after returning from another trip to Cuba.

Pope Benedict made it clear, early in his pontificate, that he would not attempt to match the record of global travel set by his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

According to Magister, the increasingly frequent trips by Cardinal Bertone are intended to advance the international agenda of the Holy See while allowing the Pontiff to remain in Rome. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
