Pilgrims brave heavy rain for pope's Good Friday procession

Roman Catholic pilgrims and tourists are turning out for Good Friday events at the Vatican and Rome's Colosseum despite heavy rain and hail this Good Friday.

Pope Benedict has asked Cardinal Joseph Zen of Hong Kong to compose meditations that will be read aloud as the pontiff leads the Way of the Cross procession commemorating Jesus' crucifixion.

Zen says the Vatican has made sure there's nothing in them that might offend China. Benedict has dedicated much of his papacy to the problems of Catholics in China.

In one of the meditations, Zen laments the persecution of Catholics in many parts of the world, but doesn't mention China by name.

China forced its Roman Catholics to cut ties with the Vatican in 1951, shortly after the Communist Party took power. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
