Electronic rosary offers helping hand with prayer

IT'S a cross between a Tamagotchi and an iPod -- and could save the conscience of those who can't make it to Sunday mass.

This high-tech digital rosary has gone on sale at just under €30, promising to give people a helping hand when praying to God.

Created by PREX, from Loreto in Italy, the company manager said the gadget: "is a very useful instrument for sick and old people because they can now pray without having to go to church everyday".

The Rosario Elettronico faithfully recites the appropriate mysteries of the rosary for each day of the week through headphones or even a loudspeaker.

It boasts that it is easy to use with lighted beads to show which prayer to say. It also allows you to "stop at any time, then continue later".

But this is not the first time a company has tried to cash in on devoted religious audiences.

The 'Vista Rosary' has already been on the market for some time. Although less technologically advanced it also has the advantage, arguably, of being less tacky.

However, in its sale pitch it says the handheld gadget "helps you find more time to pray".
