Austrian cardinal backs judge who refused to allow burka in court

Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna has voiced his support for an Austrian judge's decision that a terrorist suspect should remove her burka in court.

The cardinal said that he understood the judge's insistence that an Islamic woman should not be allowed to wear her full Islamic headdress, cloaking her identity, during a trial.

The judge had ruled that if the woman refused to remove the burka she would not be allowed into the courtroom.

Cardinal Schönborn added, however, that the judge had overstepped the bounds of legal propriety by referring to the woman's headdress as a rag. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
