Priest who pleaded guilty to money laundering sentenced today

A retired Roman Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from two rural Virginia parishes is set to be sentenced today in U.S District Court.

Rodney Rodis, 51, of Fredericksburg faces up to 40 years in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines at the sentencing.

He pleaded guilty in October to federal mail fraud and money laundering charges.

The government had said Rodis embezzled money from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bumpass and St. Jude Church in Mineral from 2002 until last year.

Authorities had also said he wired at least $515,000 to family in the Philippines.
