Bishop: Indiana Diocese Partially Responsible In Molestation

Vermont's Roman Catholic bishop considered suing an Indiana Roman Catholic diocese to make it pay part of a court settlement in a priest molestation case in Vermont.

Bishop Salvatore Matano said that the Indiana church withheld information about the priest when he was hired in Vermont and therefore should pay some of the $965,000 settlement.

Parts of Matano's letter to the Indiana bishop were included in court papers filed in a Chittenden County Superior court this week in connection with another priest molestation trial that starts next week.

Court papers say Indiana Bishop John D'Arcy wrote back that the diocese wasn't liable for Rev. Edward Paquette's misconduct in Vermont.

Michael Gay alleged Paquette sexually assaulted him when he was an alter boy in Burlington 30 years ago.

He said the diocese knew that Paquette was a paedophile when it hired him.

Attorney Jerome O'Neill of Burlington is seeking to include the letters in the upcoming case.
