Archbishop’s chaplain to be a Bishop

THE CHAPLAIN to the Archbishop of York has been named as the new Bishop of Sodor & Man on the Isle of Man.

The Rev Canon Robert Paterson, who trained for the ministry at St John’s College and Cranmer Hall, Durham, will succeed the Rt Rev Graham Knowles, who recently moved to St Paul’s Cathedral as Dean.

Canon Paterson, who is 58, served as a curate in Manchester before moving to the Church in Wales, latterly becoming a Canon after serving on a number of international bodies.

He became chaplain to the Most Rev Dr John Sentamu in 2006.

His new diocese, to which he will be consecrated after Easter, is the smallest diocese in the Church of England with just 45 churches, 27 parishes and 20 full-time clergy.

Reacting to the news Robert Paterson said: “I am delighted that God’s call has led me to the Isle of Man and to its people. I am very much looking forward to becoming part of this special community with its ancient heritage and proud traditions”.

Dr John Sentamu warmly welcomed the appointment: “I will be very sorry to lose Robert as my chaplain. The Church in Sodor & Man asked for the best and with Robert they have got it.”

Married with three grown-up children, the new bishop is author of a number of books and articles on liturgy, preaching and mission. He has been closely involved in relations between Anglican and Lutherans worldwide.

His interests include current affairs, early music, literature, walking, cycling and the countryside.
