Vatican basilica draws 15,000+ on average day

Between 15,000 and 20,000 people visit St. Peter's basilica on an average day, the archpriest of the basilica, Cardinal Angelo Comastri, told L'Osservatore Romano.

Visits to the Vatican basilica have increased sharply in recent years, and tourists may find long lines waiting outside the entrance-- and even snaking around St. Peter's Square-- during the peak tourist seasons in May and October.

A tighter focus on security has added to the delays, as guards now screen all visitors.
