President Chavez: Catholic Church has to reflect

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías, asked Venezuelan Catholic Church to reflect on the protection they are giving to a criminal (Nixon Moreno).

The statements were made during his annual administration's report from the National Assembly, Chávez addressed to the Apostolic Nuncio, Giancinto Berlocco, who was present at the Venezuelan Parliament.

“You have a criminal in there, at the Nunciature. Reflect on that, bring that criminal to the court and Venezuelan laws”.

Nixon Moreno, accused for aggression and violation attempt against a police officer of Merida State, Venezuela, in 2006, evaded the justice and he is at the Apostolic Nunciature in Caracas.

Last December 13, 2007, Moreno received his political scientist degree by the Chancellor of the Universidad de los Andes, Lester Rodríguez, at the venue of the Apostolic Nunciature in Caracas.

In this sense, Chávez pointed out that protecting this Venezuelan justice fugitive, as well as being part of ridicule graduation acts, Venezuelan Catholic Church “comes off badly”.

Furthermore, the President of the Republic talked about the request made by a Cardinal of the Catholic Church about the Law on Amnesty, signed by Chávez for those citizens who are under a judiciary process or those who are already condemned because participating in acts against the Venezuelan Government last years.

Chávez pointed out that he has been requested to make the amnesty to reach a group of police officers that are guilty for human rights violation on April 2002. He asked Catholic Church to reflect on this issue as well.

“It is sad, to see a Cardinal signing an act for a coup d'etat and then another one disrespecting the Majesties, without having any notion of what he is saying. This Cardinal is asking me to commit a crime”, said Chávez.

“The Cardinal has said something terrible. He has told me that I have to give the amnesty to some people that are being processed because they are accused for violating the human rights”, he added.
