Pope and Vatican’s Secretary of State to Visit Azerbaijan this Year

The Pope is planning to visit Azerbaijan as soon as he has an opportunity. The Head of Holy Throne, Benedict XVI, also highlighted his intentions to visit Azerbaijan during the meeting with Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the Vatican, Elchin Amirbeyov.

“The exact date of the visit has not yet been confirmed because currently the Pope has a very busy working schedule. However, as soon as he finds an opportunity, he will make this visit,” the Ambassador reported.

The Ambassador’s meeting with Benedict XVI took place within the annual meeting of the Catholic Church with the heads of the diplomatic missions, accredited in the Vatican, on the occasion of the New Year.

In addition, Amirbeyov met with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Tarchizo Bertone.

Bertone said that he is planning to visit Azerbaijan in the first half of March. A new Catholic church is expected to be opened in Baku during the visit.
