Polish cardinal backs European bioethics convention

In an interview for the Catholic Polish web site Wiara.pl, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of Krakow expressed support for the European Bioethics Convention.

The convention has roused some controversy in Poland because of the fears that the document could be invoked as the grounds for government funding of in vitro fertilization procedures. Cardinal Dziwisz remarked, “It is necessary that the law regulate in vitro fertilization."

The European standards are a necessary safeguard, he said, because: "Recourse to the conscience of doctors and scientists is not enough to guarantee for a person’s rights and moral order in public life.”

The Polish government this week sidestepped a major confrontation with the country's Catholic hierarchy by announcing that due to financial constraints, this year's government budget would not include funding for in vitro fertilization.

The bishops had argued forcefully against proposals to include that funding in the government's plans.
