Parish Investigates Embezzlement

In a letter to parishoners, Reverend H. Patrick Malone of Wichita's Holy Savior Catholic Church, says a former employee stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from the parish.

An accountant hired by the church estimates the loss at $269,914. Malone believes much of the loss is covered by insurance. He says the employee is no longer with the Holy Savior and that the church has filed a police report.

Malone says the church is implementing several procedures to make sure something like this does no happen again. These include full background checks for all employees; two signatures for all checks; a review of each month's financial activity by church leaders and an independent review the parish's financial records each year.

Malone closes his letter by asking for forgiveness for the person the church believes in responsible.
