New bishop ordained with 'cupla focail'

Monsignor Brendan Kelly, a fluent Irish speaker, was consecrated Bishop of Achonry Sunday by Cardinal Sean Brady.

The ordination took place in the cathedral of the Annunciation and St Nathy, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon.

Bishop Kelly (61) took as his motto for the small western diocese the Irish language phrase, 'de réir d'fhocail', (according to your word), which is attributed to the Virgin Mary.

From Co Galway, the new bishop was parish priest of Spiddal, and Vicar General to the Bishop of Galway, Dr Martin Drennan.

He succeeds Bishop Thomas Flynn (76) whose retirement was accepted by Pope Benedict.

Canon Thomas Johnston, Charlestown parish priest, welcomed Bishop Kelly to Achonry diocese which has a population of 35,224.
