LA archdiocese sells headquarters to pay sex abuse settlement

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles has sold the 12-story office building that serves as its administrative headquarters to help pay last year's $660 million settlement with alleged victims of clergy sex abuse.

A spokesman for the archdiocese said Tuesday the Archdiocesan Catholic Center was sold to Los Angeles-based Jamison Properties for $31 million.

The archdiocese will lease back four floors of the building under terms of a five-year lease with the new owner.

Cardinal Roger Mahony announced last year that the archdiocese would sell the Catholic Center and other church properties to raise funds for the settlement.

The Catholic Center is its first major sale.
