Finance council accuses bishop of improper spending

A member of the Finance Council of the Belleville Roman Catholic Diocese says the council has filed a complaint with the Vatican, alleging Bishop Edward Braxton misused money intended for the poor by purchasing items for the church.

The Reverend Dennis Voss, pastor of St. Liborius Church in St. Libory, said the purchases were made with money earmarked for the international Society for the Propagation of the Faith, a fund to aid Catholic missions throughout the world.

Saying the council is bound by an oath of secrecy, Voss said he could only verify the complaint was made December 14 to the Papal Nuncio in Washington, D.C.
