Aim for sanctity, Pope tells Rome's seminarians

Pope Benedict XVI met with students at Rome's diocesan seminary on January 21, the feast of their patron, St. Agnes.

In his talk to the seminarians the Holy Father spoke of Cardinal Domenico Capranica, who founded the 550-year-old seminary.

Even before the Council of Trent, the Pope said, Cardinal Capranica saw "that the desired reform would not only have to involve ecclesiastical structures but, principally, the lives and choices of those people within the Church who were called to be guides and pastors of the People of God."

Today the seminary-- known as Almo Collegio Capranica in honor of the founder-- continues to emphasize the spiritual as well as intellectual formation of students, the Pope continued.

That emphasis is prudent, he said, in light of "the multiple challenges priests and evangelizers must face on their mission" today.

He reminded the young men of the importance of cultivating "a profound interior life, a personal and constant contact with Christ in prayer and contemplation, a sincere longing for sanctity."
