Vatican tree-lighting set for Friday

The Christmas tree in St. Peter's Square will be illuminated on Friday, December 14.

Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, the president of the Vatican city-state governatorate, will preside at a brief lighting ceremony, throwing the switch that will turn on the lights of the giant fir tree.

This year the Christmas tree in St. Peter's Square is a gift from the Italian region of Val Badia, in the Dolomite Mountains.

Construction workers are already putting the giant crèche in place in the center of St. Peter's Square. That Nativity scene will be unveiled at midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

Following the established tradition, Pope Benedict will bless the crèche on December 31, following the recitation of the Te Deum sung on the final day of the year in the Vatican basilica.

This year’s Vatican crèche will include figurines of angels crafted in Mexico.
