Milan Cardinal meets Dalai Lama

Italian media are reporting a meeting yesterday between Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi of Milan and the Dalai Lama.

Rumours that the Buddhist spiritual leader, who has just started his Italian tour said, would meet with Pope Benedict were quashed when the Vatican released a statement saying the two would not meet.

But Catholic World News reports Cardinal Tettamanzi and the Dalai Lama did in fact meet despite the Cardinal’s office refusal to confirm it happened.

The Chinese government strongly protested the reports that the Pope would meet with the Dalai Lama and Beijing lodged formal complaints in the past when other world leaders have met with the Tibetan exile.

During his stay in Milan, the Dalai Lama will lead an inter-religious prayer service, deliver a lecture, and meet with Mayor Letizia Moratti.
