December 2nd. 2008 - 1st. Sunday of Advent

Watchful Eye

For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers
(Roms 13:11b)

How near is salvation?

How close are we to the love and mercy of God that is manifest in Jesus?

If we have the eyes of faith, that salvation is all around us; in the beauty of creation, in the reconciling work of redemption, in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Our task is to "cast off the deeds of darkness" and see with the eyes of faith.

Prophets have good vision. They see not only far-off things, the day when nations will no longer war against one another, but also what is close at hand.

Prophets expect that God is active in the here and now, in our historical circumstances. That expectation prepares them to see the Lord's mountain and to walk in the ways of the Lord.

Isaiah is a seer; Isaiah is a good guide for this Advent season.

Lord Jesus, help us to see. Our salvation, your love and mercy, is near at hand. Take away our blindness and give us your wisdom.
