Controversial Polish Catholic radio meets government standards

The controversial Catholic broadcaster Radio Maryja is the only one of Poland's 13 largest radio stations that abides by all government regulations, the government has found.

A study released by the government agency supervising broadcasters indicates that despite harsh criticism of the Torun-based Catholic radio station because of its strong editorial slant, Radio Maryja adheres to secular professional standards more closely than its competition.

In related news, the newspaper Nasz Dziennik has published a letter by the head of the worldwide Redemptorist order, Father Joseph Tobin, congratulating Radio Maryja on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of its founding.

Earlier this year, Polish media outlets reported that the country’s bishops were considering an approach to Father Tobin, asking him to take action to rein in Radio Maryja.

The founder and director of the radio station is a Redemptorist priest, Father Tadeusz Rydzyk.

The Polish bishops also reportedly considered asking Father Tobin to take disciplinary action against Father Rydzyk himself because of his inflammatory public statements.
