Church seeks no political power, Italian cardinal says

The Catholic hierarchy has no desire to form a political bloc in Italy, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco told an interviewer, but the Church cannot remain silent about issues that touch on human dignity.

Cardinal Bagnasco, the president of the Italian bishops' conference, told an interviewer from Uno Mattina that the Christian duty of evangelization entails "announcing that man is at the heart of society."

The Christian outlook on life, he said, involves an approach to society-- set forth in Catholic social teaching-- that proclaims the essential dignity of man and defends that dignity against any threats.

The Church, therefore, does not wish or expect to become a "parallel power" competing with government, the cardinal said.

Rather the Church promotes "a clear and firm message, respecting everyone, a message we cannon ignore in order not to betray the Gospel nor mankind."
