Brazil Bishop on River Hunger Strike Hospitalized

A Catholic Bishop who opposes a $2 billion river diversion was hospitalized after collapsing yesterday on the 22nd day of a hunger strike to pressure Brazil's government to cancel the plan, Folha Online said.

Bishop Luiz Flavio Cappio fainted after hearing that Brazil's Supreme Court said construction to divert the Sao Francisco, Brazil's fourth-largest river, should continue, Folha reported, citing Luis Roberto Cappio Guedes Pereira, the bishop's nephew.

The project to divert the Sao Francisco to irrigate Brazil's poorest and most drought-ridden Northeastern states was presented in 2005 and will benefit 6 million people, according to the government.

Cappio said the project will cause environmental damage and only benefit large agricultural companies.
