Bishop composes Carols to spread the message

A BISHOP has composed two new Carols designed to help people understand the Christian message.

The Bishop of St Albans, the Rt Rev Christopher Herbert, pictured, is to sing the two new songs tomorrow with schoolchildren from his diocese. They will then be available for download via a podcast.

The first of the two Carols, The Annunciation Tree, follows the Christian story from the Garden of Eden to the Resurrection in four-line verses. The second, The Angel’s Carol, focuses on a sense of awe and contrasts the arrival of Jesus among the shepherds with the effect it has, both then and now.

A survey in 2005 by Opinion Research Business found that 43 per cent of people expected to attend a church service of one sort or another over the Christmas period. The figure has been steadily rising since the turn of the millennium from the 33 per cent found by ORB in 2001 and 39 per cent in 2003.

The Bishop, the Rt Rev Christopher Herbert said: “With over 40 per cent of adults attending carol services or concerts over Advent and Christmas, carols and hymns provide a good way of people picking up the essentials about the Christian faith.”
