Archbishop pays tribute to outgoing Nuncio

Last Saturday, the Holy Father, Benedict XVI appointed His Excellency Most Reverend Giuseppe Lazzarotto, Titular Archbishop of Numana, as Apostolic Nuncio to Australia.

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, has expressed his good wishes to the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto on the announcement of his transfer from Dublin.

“Archbishop Lazzarotto acquired a great knowledge of the Irish Church and of the cultural and political situation in Ireland,” said Archbishop Martin. “He was an Apostolic Nuncio who listened and observed and supported the local Church and indeed had a great affection for the Church in Ireland."

Dr. Martin described him as a Nuncio who never lost touch with the pastoral dimensions of his mission. “He was delighted to celebrate the sacrament of confirmation in a number of Dublin parishes each year and his words were always greatly appreciated by children, families, clergy and teachers alike,” he said, “In Australia Archbishop Lazzarotto will bear responsibilities connected with World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney and with the visit to Australia of Pope Benedict XVI. I wish him every blessing in his new assignment.”

Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto has served as Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland since 11th November 2000. In Australia, he will succeed Archbishop Ambrose De Paoli who died after a short illness on 10th October last.

His Excellency Most Reverend Dr. Giuseppe Lazzarotto was born in Carpane (Vincenza), Italy on the 24th May 1942.

After his studies and preparation for the priesthood in the Diocesan Seminary of Padua, He was ordained a priest for the same diocese on 1st April 1967.

He then undertook post-graduate studies in diplomacy at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, while simultaneously completing his studies by obtaining a Doctorate in Canon Law. He entered the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See in 1971.

Archbishop Lazzarotto has served successively at the Pontifical Representations in Zambia and Malawi (1971- 1974), Belgium (1974-78), Cuba (1978-82), and Jerusalem (1982-1984), and in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of the Holy See (1984-1994).

He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in the Hashermite Kingdom of Jordan and in the Republic of Iraq on 23 July 1994.

He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland on 11th November 2000. He arrived in Ireland on the 16th January 2001 and presented his credentials to President Mary McAleese on 18th January 2001.
