Elderly in focus at Vatican conference

At a press conference in Rome on November 14, officials of the Pontifical Council for Health Care briefed reporters on a conference that will focus on care for the elderly, to be held November 15-17.

The conference will bring together experts from 20 different countries, in fields including pastoral care, medicine, and social work.

The topic to be discussed will include access to the sacraments, health care, nutrition, and support for the families of the elderly.

Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, the president of the Pontifical Council for Health Care, noted that there are 390 million people above the age of 65 living in the world today.

That number is expected to soar toward 800 million within the next 18 years, he said.

Thus the Church is searching for better ways to address the pastoral needs of the aging population.
