Bishop Niedergeses Dies At 90

Bishop James D. Niedergeses, retired bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese Nashville died Friday morning in Nashville.

He had suffered a variety of health issues for a number of years.

He died at Saint Thomas Hospital where he was treated for a blood clot on his leg, according to Rick Musacchio, director of communications for the diocese.

The bishop began hemorrhaging and became unresponsive early Thursday morning.

Niedergeses was the first priest of the diocese to be named bishop.

He was the ninth bishop of Nashville from 1975 to 1992.

He retired as bishop at 75 as required by church law, but remained active. He served as hospital chaplain at Saint Thomas Hospital.

The funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Incarnation with burial in Lawrenceburg.

Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville will be the principal celebrant. Visitation plans have not yet been finalized.

The Diocese of Nashville is the state's oldest Roman Catholic diocese.

It includes 38 counties in Middle Tennessee with a Catholic population of approximately 75,000, according to the Tennessee Register, the diocesan newspaper. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
