Austrian bishops barred from holy site for wearing crosses...

Austrian officials say their nation's 13 Roman Catholic bishops were barred from praying at Jerusalem's Western Wall when they refused to take off their crosses.

On a planned visit last Thursday to the holiest place where Jews can pray, the bishops were told by the Western Wall's rabbi to either remove the crosses or stand behind a fence several yards from the site.

An Austrian official says the bishops refused and remained behind the fence.

The rabbi says that while the site is open to all religions, worshipers are expected not to offend the sensitivities of Jews.

He said even Pope John Paul II hid his cross during a historic visit to the Western Wall in 2000.

But pictures show the pope wearing the cross while praying.
