Montreal cemetery expected to table final offer to end bitter labour dispute

Management at one of Canada's largest cemeteries is expected to present what it calls its final offer to its union today in hopes of ending a bitter labour dispute.

Union president Daniel Maillet says the two parties have agreed on all issues except for pensions.

Workers at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery in Montreal are expected to vote Friday on the offer.

Employees had been locked out in May after contract negotiations faltered and then went on strike.

They went back to work in mid-September after four months after management agreed to lift the lockout.

When employees returned to the job, there were about 500 bodies awaiting burial at the Roman Catholic cemetery.

A number of famous Canadians such as former Quebec premier Robert Bourassa and hockey legend Maurice (Rocket) Richard are buried at the cemetery, which is the third largest in North America.
