Korean cardinal pelted with eggs

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk's car has been pelted with eggs by local residents living near a Seoul church.

The action is a protest against his intention to build a "charnel house" for the cremated remains of deceased parishioners.

2500 riot police attended to protect the cardinal and parishioners entering the church. There were no injuries.

A charnel house contains the cremated remains of people who have died. The cremation itself is done in other, special facilities.

Protesters argue that their children need their environment protected.

In Korea, building a charnel house does not require government approval.

In a similar incident in 2005 in another parish, a Supreme Court appeal came down on the side of the Church.
