Diocese of Kilmore CSA Allegation

A priest at the centre of a sexual abuse allegation has agreed to stand aside from his duties, it was revealed.

The man, who it is understood is in his 40s, is from the Diocese of Kilmore.

He was questioned by gardaí in Co Cavan yesterday before being released without charge.A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), a garda spokesman said.

It is believed the allegation came from a 15-year-old boy.

In a statement, Bishop of Kilmore Leo O’Reilly said that, in accordance with Church guidelines, the priest agreed to stand aside from his ministry pending the outcome of the investigation.

“I was informed yesterday (Friday) by the Gardaí that they are investigating a complaint against a priest of the diocese of Kilmore, which involves the alleged sexual abuse of a child,” he said.“This was the first time that the matter came to my attention.

“In accordance with Children First and Church guidelines, the priest in question agreed to stand aside from his ministry pending the outcome of this investigation."

“His agreement to stand aside is not an admission of guilt and should not be construed as such,” he said.

The Diocese of Kilmore stretches from Kinlough in North Leitrim to Kilmainhamwood in Co Meath, and includes part of Cos Cavan, Leitirim, Meath and Fermanagh.
