Archbishop Wilson warns Adelaide priests on personal safety

Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson has warned priests to pay attention to their personal security following a recent incident in which armed men broke into a presbytery.

The Southern Cross reports that the incident has prompted recommendations for duress alarms and a clear emergency plan.

Archdiocesan clergy care co-ordinator Anthea Boden wants a crisis management chart developed and placed prominently in presbyteries.

She said alert buttons should also be installed. She said some priests are "alone and isolated".

Two months ago, two armed men broke into the Virginia Parish presbytery.

They bound the 72 year old parish priest Fr Michael Doherty.

They disabled his phone line, before stealing his car and fleeing with a chalice.
