Govt pledges further $15m for Catholic Youth Day

The Federal Government has agreed to give an extra $15 million to the Catholic Church to run World Youth Day, to be held in Sydney this time next year.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister says John Howard met with Catholic Archbishop George Pell yesterday and agreed on the funding package.

The extra funding was requested by the Cardinal Pell and takes the Government's commitment to $35 million.

The NSW Government has also committed $20 million.

Catholic World Youth Day is being billed as the biggest event in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics.

More than 135,000 registrations have already been received for the event.

The final mass with Pope Benedict is expected to attract 500,000 people.
